Scotland

The weather has been so dreadful lately and so we were seeking a weekend of yummy food and wind blown adventures. Scotland seemed the ideal place to pretend visit – and (as so often happens in real Scotland) the sun decided to make an appearance despite the weather warnings!

Breakfast

We actually had two breakfasts in pretend Scotland and they were both really worth eating! We started with porridge (of course) covered in brown sugar and then at lunch time we had a Scottish Breakfast with eggs and beans and all of the yummy things!

I’ll admit that I cheated with the microwave porridge oats but it would be fun to prep the real thing and to make it with the kids.

The Loch Ness Monster Cake

We bought a plain sponge cake and chopped it up. then we made some green butter icing and smashed it all together. My original plan was to make a monster puppet out of egg boxes, chopped up and painted and strung together. This probably looked far far worse but it did taste very nice and we had it for our morning snack. Penny knew all about the Loch Ness Monster and drew a picture of it for us to copy, Freddie just roared at it.

The Highland Fling

This dance turned out to be very hard! We found a Wiggles version and even that had us flummoxed. Penny put her kilt on and gave it a good go but honestly it was beyond us. Massive credit to those who can! I have a memory of a friends Scottish wedding where I was similarly out of my depth as the music came on. (Hendricks) Gin helps.

Welly Toss

I am actually unsure if this is Scottish but we loved it anyway and we also tried a caber toss which is definitely Scottish (although our ‘caber’ was really just a big stick). I couldn’t believe that the sun had actually come out too. Freddie is always happiest in the garden and so it was great to get some fresh air.

All of the great food!

We had a brilliant tea with a random collection of Scottish things we like eating. The high spot for me was the Scottish smoked Salmon and oat cakes and Mark loved the goats cheese. Penny was all about the Tunnocks bars and the Mars Bar (even though we decided against deep frying it, as I have heard they do beyond the wall).

Brave

We were all ready for a movie night and there wasn’t much debate as to which movie it would be! Merida is an awesome heroine and Penny has loved her since she met her in Disney 4 years ago. Freddie loves a good movie and a good cuddle and so a happy and cosy evening was spent away from the latest crazy storm to hit the UK.

And so…

Googlemaps tells me that we live only two hours away from Gretna Green in Scotland and so we have resolved to really visit Scotland in the next few weeks. One of the most wonderful things about living in the North West is that you are only 2 hours from Scotland and an hour from Wales and that’s a pretty fun (and delicious) place to be.

We pretended to be in Scotland for the weekend from home. Using cooking and family activities related to Scotland
