We love to pretend travel and plan days where we immerse ourselves in different cultures. One way we do this is by theming our bedtime story to the place we are visiting and so we have found books from all around the world. Reading helps us to explore other cultures!
Canada
Anne of Green Gables is one of my favourite books and we so when we visited pretend Canada I was delighted to find a version for younger children. The book follows the adventures of Anne, an orphan with a big imagination. I have always wanted to visit Prince Edward Island – maybe next year!
India
Cinnamon is a beautiful story about a blind girl and her tiger. In a hot, hot country, ringed with mountains on one side and jungle on the other, lives a princess called Cinnamon. Her eyes are made of pearls, which means that she is blind. And, for reasons her parents the Rajah and Rani cannot fathom, she will not talk. So they offer a reward to anyone who can teach Cinnamon to speak. People travel from far and wide to attempt it, but nothing works. Until a mighty tiger, huge and fierce, prowls into their palace and announces that he is here to teach the girl-cub to talk … It was the perfect end to our trip to pretend India. We also watched the jungle book and that would be a perfect read for older kids.
Greece
I had a book of Greek Myths when I was a little girl and I think it’s why I went on to study and teach Classics. Who doesn’t love tales of gods and monsters? Penny is equally obsessed and even went to world book day as a goddess from the Iliad which she started to read on our pretend visit to Greece.
DenmarK
Without a doubt the best pretend visit we had for Fairy Tales was our visit to Denmark and the world of Hans Christian Andersen. Not just great for bedtime stories, thanks to Disney many of his tales have been turned into movies. But for me the best movie is an old one – a old but brilliant musical about the man himself.
